Postcolonial Cinema – Critical Perspectives – Discussion Event
24.11.2023: Post Colonial Cinema: Judas and the Black Messiah
“ It`s not a question of violence or non violence.
It`s a question of resistance to fascism, or non
existence within fascism.” Fred Hampton
Based on an online lecture, the event introduced a critical point of view
towards the predominant negative presentation and misinterpretation of
Black History.Same way, the lecture highlighted important facts about
the origins and political motivation of the # BLM movement, in order to
open up a discussion event and provide references to tackle racism and
disinformation targeting BIPOC`s (Black, Indigenous and People of color).
Well received by the majority of viewers, main criticism remains:
IT`S A MOVIE ABOUT AN INFORMANT. The history of Fred Hampton
and the Black Panther Party is secondary. Main focus remains the per –
sonality of O`Neil ! Black History and the major statements about collec-
tive emancipation are secondary.
“ It was shot beautifully [ … ] the acting was amazing.
But it`s a movie about an informant. Fred is secondary
and radical communist politics are not centered at all.“
